In the 17 seasons of the Indian Premier League, franchise owners like Vijay Mallya, Preity Zinta, Raj Kundra and Sanjiv Goenka have often made headlines. But nothing compares to the storm that was kicked off when Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan got into a spat with the security at Wankhede Stadium back in 2012.

The incident happened right after an IPL game at the Wankhede Stadium where SRK’s team, the Kolkata Knight Riders had defeated the Mumbai Indians. Right after the result, cameras caught a sight of an angry Shah Rukh gesticulating at a security guard in the middle of the stadium.

The officials accused Shah Rukh of trying to walk on to the field of play after the game. MCA officials lodged a complaint against him the Marine Drive police station. They also said he had been drunk and abused officials.

The MCA then banned Shah Rukh from entering the stadium for five years.

“If rules are violated, action will be taken. It does not depend who the individual is. It’s a message to everyone, whosoever he or she may be, that stern action will be taken if there is any misbehavior. How can he go inside the ground without proper accreditation? Even I can’t go inside the ground if not invited for presentation ceremony,” former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was the MCA president at the time, had said when announcing the ban.

The ban was eventually revoked after three years.

In an appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, Shah Rukh had explained how he was triggered by a word used by the security staff, which was religious in nature. “I was very angry and upset. My kids were there and I thought someone… Maybe they had a rule, that hatao yaha se. I told him, these are our kids and we are taking them. I just said this. There was a person there who said a word which I, as a Delhi person, felt like it was an abusive word. Even though the same word in Marathi is also rude. Thoda sa religious, galat tha woh (It was religious, it was wrong). I then lost my cool, main pagal hogaya and I went to hit him,” the superstar recalled.
