Ahead of the IPL mega auction, MI have some tough decisions to make in terms of their retentions.
IPL 2025 Mega Auction: BCCI last month released the retention policy for IPL 2025. Each team will be allowed to retain 6 players. So let’s check out why MI will not be able to retain Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya together for the IPL mega auction.
MI retention woes for IPL mega auction
Suryakumar Yadav is the captain of India’s T20 team, while Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya also come in the list of top players. If we look at the retention policy, then a team can retain two players for Rs 18 crore, two players for Rs 14 crore and one player for Rs 11 crore before the auction. Suryakumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya all appear to be players who deserve to get 18 crore salaries.
Apart from them, Rohit Sharma may have been removed from the captaincy last season, but he might also be in contention for being retained for the top slot.
The retention policy says that only 2 players can be retained for Rs 18 crore. To put it bluntly, due to the salary slot of retained players created by the BCCI, it seems almost impossible for MI to retain Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Jasrprit Bumrah together.
If a franchise retains 5 capped players and one uncapped player, then his purse will be empty of Rs 79 crore due to 6 players. In such a situation, the team management will have only Rs 41 crore left to prepare the rest of the team.
