India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st T20I Match Today: Team India’s new head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has built his coaching reputation in the corridors of IPL with three title wins for Kolkata Knight Riders — twice as captain and once as mentor — succeeds the immensely popular Rahul Dravid. The new coach has his task cut out given that the team under his predecessor reached the final in each of the ICC events in their respective last editions.

Meanwhile, 33-year-old Suryakumar was appointed India’s T20 captain last week, with his tenure beginning with a three-match series in Sri Lanka on Saturday. Suryakumar’s elevation came as a slight surprise given he leapfrogged Hardik Pandya for the job. The selectors also ignored his comparative lack of experience as captain.

The next T20 World Cup, to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2026, gives the selectors plenty of time to rebuild the side which has also suffered a severe talent drain. The overhaul follows the World Cup triumph last month and T20I retirements of seasoned campaigners Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja.

Almost a month after winning the T20 World Cup, and having already done and dusted a victorious tour of Zimbabwe, beginning with the first T20I on Saturday, India will take baby steps under a new captain and head coach. The series against Zimbabwe earlier this month provided ample indications as to where this team is headed, at least from the selectors’ point of view. The majority of the personnel who are in Pallekele are the same as the touring party in Harare, but this is now Suryakumar Yadav’s team. The new captain unites with head coach Gautam Gambhir, who was amongst the earliest to forecast Surya’s greatness in the format during their stint together at Kolkata Knight Riders. (READ MORE)
