KL Rahul and Shubman Gill offered semblance of a counter before Starc and Scott Boland blighted the top-order. India slipped to 87 for five before Nitish Kumar Reddy’s fighting 42 took his side to 180 before Starc’s sixth wicket ended the innings.
Batting under the lights, Australia were let off by a wavering Indian pace-bowling unit. Barring Jasprit Bumrah’s dismissal of Usman Khawaja, Mohammed Siraj and Harshit Rana flattered to deceive with the pink ball, erring on lines. Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan McSweeney batted the hosts on stumps with Australia trailing by only 94 runs.
