Fire Disrupts Power
A major fire in the Singrauli superthermal power station in Uttar Pradesh seriously disrupted power supply in the northern region. Fire was seen in conveyor belts carrying coal to the boilers at 10 pm. Firefighting was immediately organised by authorities and it was brought under control by 3am. The conveyor damage resulted in a complete stoppage of generation from all units.
Delhi Load Shedding
The Delhi Electric Supply Undertaking does not promise a bright Diwali to citizens having already resorted to a massive load-shedding of some 100 MW. Different areas of the city were affected by the load shedding, although the worst hit were the industrial complexes of Naraina and Mayapuri in the west.
Tihar Jailbreak
Two of the most feared criminals lodged inside Tihar jail escaped scaling three high walls to disappear into darkness. The ingenious jailbreak left jail officials stunned. Five wardens were immediately suspended. The criminals who escaped are Gorakh, a feared gangster of Bihar, and Shyam Sunder alias Shyama of Shahadara. Shyama was one of the prisoners whose records recently vanished from the jail, and he left without a trace.
Bhatnagar Awards
Prof Naba K Ray of Delhi University and Indira Nath of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are among the 12 scientists and technologists who have been awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prizes in science and technology for 1983. Each award carries a scroll and Rs 20,000 in cash.
