Imtiaz Ali
disclosed that
Amar Singh Chamkila
‘s song ‘
Vida Karo
‘ was composed by AR Rahman and
Irshad Kamil
at 2:30 am by candlelight. By the time the song was completed, those in the studio were in tears.
Imtiaz recounted how Rahman joined them at 2:30 am in the studio as they were preparing to leave. Rahman suggested dimming the lights and lighting candles for a more enjoyable ambiance.
As he played the tune, they discussed old Hindi film songs, including music from
Guru Dutt
films. Imtiaz was simply immersed in the music as an audience member.
Irshad quickly penned the lines in just 45 minutes. Rahman then suggested composing the song on the spot. As they worked, some individuals in the studio became emotional. Rahman humorously remarked to Irshad, “What have you done, Irshad Kamil? You’re making people cry.”
