Jay Shah has refused to rule out the non-continuation of the Impact player rule from next season, saying the fate of the rule will be decided after a chat with the franchises.
The impact player rule in the ongoing IPL 2024 has attracted a lot of controversy. The rule allows an extra player to be fielded by every team. Various cricketers have come out to speak against the rule, saying it has made the sport a batter’s game and has diminished the role of the all-rounders. However, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has supported the rule, saying it allows two extra Indian players to take part in the game.
Shah, during the conversation revealed that the BCCI will soon put out an advertisement for a new Indian coach as Rahul Dravid’s term moves towards the end. He also divulged that Hardik Pandya has agreed to play domestic white-ball cricket.
How does Impact Player rule works?
Following the commencement of play, the captains of the two teams may designate any one of these five replacements to take the place of a starting player during any of the game’s natural breaks. These can occur at the beginning of an innings, the conclusion of an over, the removal of a wicket, or the retirement of a batter.

Jay Shah has refused to rule out the non-continuation of the Impact player rule from next season, saying the fate of the rule will be decided in a meeting with the stakeholders and the franchises. He also said the BCCI has not received any negative feedback in the rule till now.
“Impact player was a test case. Two new Indian players are getting a chance in the IPL,” he stressed when it was pointed out that the rule diminishes the all-rounders’ role in the team.
“We will discuss with the stakeholders – franchises and broadcasters – before deciding on the continuation of the Impact Player. It’s not permanent, but no one has provided feedback against the rule,” he said.
