Former India cricketers Sanjay Manjrekar and Irfan Pathan got into an on-air debate about the Yashasvi Jaiswal run out incident on Day 2 of the India vs Australia Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

While discussing the incident on air, Sanjay Manjrekar and Irfan Pathan disagreed about who was responsible for the mix-up. Sanjay Manjrekar felt that Virat Kohli should’ve responded to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s call and gone for the single. But Irfan Pathan disagreed. The former India pacer pointed out that Virat Kohli was also at the risk of getting run-out at the striker’s end since the shot hit from Yashasvi Jaiswal had travelled fast.

What happened between Jaiswal and Kohli?

The incident which sparked off the on-air bickering between Sanjay Manjrekar and Irfan Pathan happened in the 41st over of India’s innings. Jaiswal played the ball to mid-on and immediately hared off for a single. He did call for the single, but Kohli turned around to see the ball’s path and ended up missing the visual of his batting partner running and Jaiswal’s call as well.

Both players ended up at the same end and Jaiswal was run out for 82. While walking off, the Mumbai youngster did touch his chest as if to say that it was his call. Kohli, who was batting at 35 off 83 balls lasted for 13 more balls, off which he played three deliveries and managed to add just one more run to his tally.

“It was Yashasvi Jaiswal’s call. Ball was going slow, I don’t feel that Kohli would have been run out. Maybe a risky run. But Jaiswal was at the danger end, not Virat Kohli. It was a schoolboy error from Virat that he looked back and decided it wasn’t a run. If it was a bad call from Jaiswal, he would’ve gotten out at the non-striker’s end,” Manjrekar said.

Irfan Pathan tried to give an example that if the ball had gone to point region, the call would have been non-striker’s. But even the striker could have refused the call. That led to the start of the bickering. Pathan pointed out that since the ball had gone to Pat Cummins, Kohli might have decided against the single.

“You’re not giving the right example,” Manjrekar retorted.

“This is not about sacchai aur jhoot (truth and falsehood). This is an opinion,” Irfan Pathan says at one point during the exchange.

The two former cricketers spoke over each other, with Sanjay Manjrekar saying: “If you don’t want to let me talk, it’s alright”.

At the end of the argument, Sanjay Manjrekar said: “Irfan Pathan’s new interpretation of whether it is a run or not, should be added to the coaching manual.”

Manjrekar also opined: “Kohli’s dismissal probably also down to the guilt he had inside his heart over Jaiswal’s run-out. He was leaving outside-off deliveries until then but lost his concentration after the run-out incident.”
