Axar Patel has scored 51 and 41* respectively in the past 2 ODIs against England
The KL Rahul-Axar Patel experiment has drawn criticism far and wide. Former players and pundits have expressed their displeasure with KL Rahul being pushed down the order, meanwhile, Axar Patel has been promoted up the order. However, now former Gujarat coach Hitesh Majumdar has come out to speak in favor of Axar Patel. He has claimed that Axar’s batting antics make him a vital asset for the team.
Back in the ICC T20 World Cup, Axar Patel was sent to bat at 5, ahead of Hardik Pandya. Come the IND vs ENG ODI series, a similar pattern has been observed. KL Rahul had to relinquish his favored number 5 spot as Patel moved up. This experiment however had two results, while Axar performed well with the bat, KL Rahul didn’t.
Axar Patel – Vital asset for the Team
Former players have argued that it was foolish to push a batter down the order for an all-rounder. But now Hitesh Majumdar under whom Axar made his domestic debut, claimed that Axar is more of a batting all-rounder which makes him different from others.
“Axar’s batting credentials are not talked about enough. He played a vital role in Gujarat winning the Vijay Hazare trophy in 2015-16 and the Syed Mushtaq Ali in 2014-15. He has the ability to hit the ball to all parts of the ground, which makes his batting a vital aspect of his game. He showed that with his innings in Barbados, which allowed Virat to play his game and Dube to accelerate as usual,” Hitesh Majumdar told The Times of India.

Majumdar claimed Patel has the ability to play a wide range of shots. He also claimed that he played a crucial role in Gujarat winning the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He further added, that whenever Axar was asked to bat up the order, he performed exceedingly well. This further makes him one of the best all-rounders in India.
“Whenever Axar has been given the opportunity to bat up the order, he has delivered. He plays according to the situation. He is refining his game to suit the needs of the team. He works hard on his batting and is among the best allrounders India currently have. While Ravindra Jadeja is more of a bowling allrounder, Axar is a proper batting allrounder,” Majmudar concluded.
