Now, one couldn’t ask for a better contest, as everything is set for the India vs New Zealand Champions Trophy final. But have these two teams ever met in a Champions Trophy final in the past?
When the Champions Trophy 2025 began, it was expected that New Zealand would be the team to challenge India, and that is exactly what happened. Among all the teams India faced in the group stage, it was New Zealand’s fielding and bowling that stood out when the Men in Blue played against them. Although India still emerged superior and defeated the Blackcaps, New Zealand has now made it to the final, setting up a thrilling clash against the Men in Blue.
India has been dominant so far, winning all three group games and convincingly defeating the mighty Australians in the semi-final. Now, the final challenge awaits as India takes on New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final on March 9.
All eyes will be on this grand showdown, but do you know about India and New Zealand’s history in the Champions Trophy? It’s quite interesting, as they haven’t faced each other often in the tournament. Yes, they recently met, but apart from that, the sample size is small. However, one encounter that still stands out took place way back in 2000.
In the year 2000, India and New Zealand faced each other in the ICC Champions Trophy, which was then known as the ICC Knockout Trophy. It was the Blackcaps who came out on top.
India put up a strong batting display, setting a competitive total of 264 runs, thanks to a brilliant 141-run partnership between Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. Ganguly, who was in outstanding form, showcased his class once again with a century, while Tendulkar chipped in with a crucial 69 runs. However, regular wickets in the latter half of the innings prevented India from posting an even bigger total.
In response, New Zealand had a shaky start, losing both openers early. However, Chris Cairns turned the tide, dismantling India’s bowling attack with an unbeaten 102. Chris Harris also provided valuable support, helping the Blackcaps secure victory by four wickets.
