India’s D Gukesh rises to fourth in FIDE rankings, surpassing Arjun Erigaisi.
India’s grandmaster and World Chess Champion, D Gukesh has rapidly climbed the chess rankings, becoming the highest-ranked Indian player. In the latest FIDE rankings, he has reached the fourth position, surpassing his compatriot Arjun Erigaisi. Gukesh achieved this impressive feat by securing his second victory at the Tata Steel Tournament in Wijk Aan Zee, Netherlands, where he defeated Germany’s Vincent Keymer.
Achievements and rankings
Recently awarded the Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, Gukesh has earned 2784 rating points. This puts him ahead of Arjun Erigaisi, who has long been the top-ranked Indian chess player but has now slipped to fifth place with 2779.5 points. Meanwhile, Norway’s Magnus Carlsen continues to lead the world rankings, followed by American Grandmasters Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana.
Consistent performance from Gukesh
Gukesh has been in excellent form since winning the world title by defeating China’s Ding Liren in Singapore last December. After taking a break to enjoy celebrations and attend functions in India, he skipped the World Rapid and Blitz Championship in New York. However, upon his return to competitive play, Gukesh has maintained an unbeaten record in the Wijk Aan Zee tournament.
Gukesh in Tata Steel Chess Tournament
In the ongoing Tata Steel Chess Tournament, Gukesh has not lost any matches. He has already secured two victories and drawn three games, with eight rounds still remaining. His consistent performance and rising ranking highlight his potential as a significant force in international chess, making him a player to watch in the coming years.
