The Central Government has officially notified an increase in the salary, daily allowance, pension, and additional pension of Members and Ex-Members of Parliament, effective from April 1, 2023. This change is made in the exercise of the powers granted by the Salary, Allowances, and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954, and is based on the Cost Inflation Index as outlined in the Income-tax Act, 1961.

The revised payouts are as follows:

  • Salary: The monthly salary for Members of Parliament has been increased from Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 1,24,000.
  • Daily Allowance: The daily allowance has been raised from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500.
  • Pension: The monthly pension for Members and Ex-Members of Parliament has been revised from Rs 25,000 to Rs 31,000.
  • Additional Pension: Ex-Members will also see an increase in the additional pension for each year of service, from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500.

The move comes days after Karnataka government approved a 100% salary hike for the Chief Minister, Ministers, and MLAs, triggering a heated debate in the assembly.

The BJP, led by opposition leader R Ashoka, shouted slogans against the government for providing four per cent reservation to Muslims in public contracts.

The decision around the salary hike was granted through two amendment bills—the Karnataka Ministers’ Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Karnataka Legislature Members’ Salaries, Pensions, and Allowances (Amendment) Bill 2025.

Defending the decision, Karanataka Home Minister G Parameshwara cited rising expenses as a key factor. “The justification is that their expenditure is also going up along with other people. A common man is also suffering, and MLAs are also suffering. So, recommendations have come from MLAs and others, and that is why the Chief Minister has taken the decision. Everybody has to survive and CM will manage to give this money from some account…”
