A Government Order (GO) to set up an integrated textile park in Salem at a cost of ₹880 crores has been issued, Tourism Minister R. Rajendran said on Monday.

The Minister was participating in the inauguration of a Mudhalvar Marunthagam (Chief Minister’s Pharmacy) at Chinna Tirupathi in Salem Corporation. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated 32 pharmacies in the district through video conferencing, while Mr. Rajendran inspected the medical supplies and inaugurated the first sale at the outlet.

Later, speaking to reporters at the Inspection Bungalow in Hasthampatti, the Minister said, the Chief Minister in 2021 announced in the Legislative Assembly that an integrated textile park would be set up in Salem. Now the State Government has issued the GO for the park, which is set to come up at Jahir Ammapalayam at a cost of ₹880 crore on 119 acres of land. “All the work would be done by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT). The park would result in direct employment for 15,000 people and indirect employment for 50,000 people, and women would account for 75% of the workforce. The park would boost opportunities for export for textile units and generate ₹7,000 crore in export revenue,” the Minister added.

Construction of the park would begin this month and will be completed in two years, Mr. Rajendran said, adding that this would also prevent the release of effluents into the Thirumanimutharu River. The effluents would be taken through pipelines and would be recycled and used in the park, and SIPCOT would provide water and electricity to the park, the minister said. “Like the steel plant, the textile park has also been a big dream of the people of Salem. That dream has now been fulfilled by the Chief Minister. Already as per the announcement, the mini-tidel park was inaugurated and works for the multi-storey manufacturing centre for silver anklet manufacturers are nearing completion,” he said.

District Collector R. Brindha Devi and officials from the concerned departments participated in the press meet and the function.
