Future captain in the making? Shubman Gill named India’s limited-over Vice-Captain for IND vs SL series

Shubman Gill has led India in 5 matches, winning 4 of them.

Shubman Gill has been named the vice-captain of the Indian cricket team for their upcoming IND vs SL series. He will be leading the Indian game as the vice-captain in the ODI and T20I formats.

This comes after Gill successfully led India to a 4-1 victory in a recent T20I series against Zimbabwe.

This move by the BCCI shows their future planning, as it might be a stepping stone for Gill to learn the ropes of captaincy, potentially paving the way for him to take the captaincy throne in the future.

Guaranteed spot in the playing XI

While there was speculation that Gill might not be included in the playing eleven for the T20I series against Sri Lanka, his vice-captaincy role suggests a near-certain spot in both the T20I and ODI squads.

IPL struggles for Gill as captain

Gill’s recent success with the national team stands in contrast to his performance as captain of the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024. Following Hardik Pandya’s return to the Mumbai Indians, Gill took the captaincy for the Titans.

However, their performance under his leadership was poor, with the team only winning 5 out of 14 matches and failing to qualify for the playoffs.
