Forty years ago: Riots in Bombay, a heatwave in Delhi and a coup in Pakistan

Punjab Violence

Seventeen people were killed, nearly two dozen injured, and Rs 87,000 looted during the past 24 hours in stepped-up terrorist activity in Punjab, as the authorities placed the sub-divisional headquarters of Mansa in Bhatinda district under curfew. Four bus passengers belonging to a particular community were gunned down near Moga when six unidentified persons sprayed bullets on the passengers on the bus.

Pak Coup Attempt

Pakistan’s military ruler, Gen Zia-ul-Haq, has survived yet another coup attempt, according to top Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leaders in exile who are in constant contact with the “persons concerned” in Islamabad. According to these sources, one of the persons directly involved in the latest “topple Zia exercise” is a top-level unidentified general who has now been arrested. Governor of Sind Gen Abbasi has been nabbed as well.

Bombay Riots Deaths

Even as an uneasy calm prevailed in the army-occupied areas of Bhiwandi, fresh violence erupted in new localities of Bombay and Thane with anti-social elements and underworld gangs using the deteriorating situation to their advantage. Two persons were stoned to death in Mulund, while another five died in armed clashes in Bhayandar in Thane district. The police were compelled to open fire at Kherwadi and Jogeshwari.

Heatwave Toll

The heat wave, gripping northern, central and southern parts of the country, claimed two more victims in Bihar taking the toll this season in the state to 33. The fresh deaths were reported from Rohtas district. For the third day in succession, Champa town in Bilaspur district of Madhya Pradesh recorded the day’s highest temperature with the mercury remaining constant at 47 degrees C.
