The Forest Department is continuing to monitor a male wild elephant that allegedly trampled two persons to death and caused damages to properties in villages bordering forests.
Field staff from Coimbatore and Periyanaickenpalayam forest ranges have been tasked to monitor the movement of the elephant, following demands from certain sections of farmers for its translocation.
The Department is in relief for the past few days as the tusker was found roaming in the company of a herd inside the forest.
An official from the Department said that the tusker had not strayed into villages for the past few days and it was found spending time inside forests.
“Another adult tusker in musth is also present in the same area. Hence, the elephant that is being monitored is very likely to avoid an encounter with the tusker in musth,” said the official.
The Department is taking Chinna Thambi, a kumki from the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, for patrols through forest boundaries in Coimbatore range to prevent wild elephants from straying into villages.
