Budget Session 2024 to begin from July 22; Nirmala Sitharaman to table Narendra Modi government’s Union Budget in Lok Sabha on July 23.
Budget Session 2024 will begin from July 22 to August 12, announced parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday. The Union Budget will be presented in the Lok Sabha on July 23.
“Hon’ble President of India, on the recommendation of Government of India, has approved the proposal for summoning of both the Houses of Parliament for the Budget Session, 2024 from 22nd July, 2024 to 12 August, 2024 (Subject to exigencies of Parliamentary Business),” Rijiju said in an X post.
Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present first budget of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term. Earlier this year, she had presented an interim budget as Lok Sabha elections was pending.
Big expectations from Union Budget 2024
There is much anticipation from this budget after President Droupadi Murmu’s promise of historic steps in her address to Parliament.
President Murmu, in her joint address to the Parliament, assured the nation that in the upcoming Parliament sessions, major economic and social decisions, and historical steps will be announced during the Union Budget.
“In the upcoming sessions, this government is going to present the first budget of this term. This budget will be an effective document of the government’s far-reaching policies and futuristic vision. Along with big economic and social decisions, many historic steps will also be seen in this budget,” President Murmu added.

Nirmala Sitharaman to be first FM to table budget 7 times
As Union finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman has presented a total of six budgets, including the Interim Budget on February 1. She is the second finance minister to achieve this milestone after matching former PM Morarji Desai’s record. Sitharaman, the first full-time woman finance minister of India, has delivered five complete budgets since July 2019.
Her tenure has surpassed the records of previous finance ministers such as Manmohan Singh, Arun Jaitley, P Chidambaram, and Yashwant Sinha, each of whom presented five consecutive budgets.
During her tenure, Sitharaman introduced some changes to the budget process. In 2019, she replaced the traditional budget briefcase with a ‘bahi-khata’ adorned with the National Emblem to carry the speech and documents. Recently, she has been using a tablet wrapped in the bahi-khata for the budget presentation.
