A major reshuffle of secretaries to the Union government involving about 30 departments and ministries was officially announced. Coming in the wake of the appointment of a new cabinet secretary and secretaries to four key ministries a few days ago, it substantially completed the process of secretary-level reshuffle undertaken by the Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, after the installation of his post-election cabinet.

Deadly Fire On Ship
Thirteen passengers were charred to death and over 100 received burns in the fire that broke out aboard the passenger ship MV Chidambaram. The ship with 700 passengers and cargo caught fire on the high seas, 300 km off south-east of Madras. Elaborate arrangements are being made at the Madras Port Trust Hospital to receive the injured.

Dacoit Attack

Armed dacoits attacked and looted a family travelling in the Flying Mail as it passed Minto Bridge in New Delhi, throwing a woman victim off the running train when she tried to resist. The dacoits, armed with revolvers and knives, also attacked and injured a six-year-old girl during the course of the dramatic dacoity on the train in the heart of the city. The dacoits escaped later with arms and jewellery worth thousands of rupees.

Sri Lanka Shootout

At least 14 guerillas and four soldiers were killed and several wounded in a shootout between separatist guerillas and soldiers in the fishing village of Kokillai in north-eastern Lanka, official sources said here. A group of 60 armed guerillas stormed into the fishing village, which was also the scene of a massacre in December when at least 14 men, women and children were killed by guerillas.
