Foreign secretaries of seven South Asian governments are meeting in Maldives to hold discussions concerning the South Asian summit likely to take place in Dhaka. The occasion for the deliberation is being provided by a meeting of the standing committee of South Asian Regional Cooperation (SARC). Members of the standing committee are the foreign secretaries of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
Acid plants closure
The Maharashtra government has directed the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) to close down two old nitric acid plants at the Chembur complex till the emission levels are analysed and brought within acceptable limits. These two plants would not be opened till the safety measures recommended by the experts’ committee are discussed with RCF officials and implemented.

The Chief Election Commissioner, R K Trivedi, asked the states holding assembly elections next month to redefine the “sensitive areas” to include those constituencies where repoll had been ordered during the recent Lok Sabha elections. Trivedi said that these sensitive areas would also include the regions where it was found during counting that 90 per cent of the votes had been recorded.
Akalis divided
The second rung of the Akali leadership is in a dilemma over the posture they should adopt regarding any settlement with the government on their demands. Some Akali sections known to be moderates have urged the Akali leadership and the Sikh priests not to say or do anything that may further alienate the Sikhs from the national mainstream.
