Champai Soren, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, has announced his resignation from both his position in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and his ministerial role. Soren made the announcement following a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi earlier this week.
He stated, “Today I resigned from the primary membership and all the posts of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Our struggle will continue on the issues of tribals, original residents, Dalits, backward classes, and common people of Jharkhand.” Soren emphasized that his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was motivated by his commitment to Jharkhand’s interests and his readiness to confront any challenges.
Allegations and Political Reactions
The resignation comes amidst serious allegations of surveillance. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that Champai Soren had been monitored by Jharkhand Police for the past five months. Sarma alleged that two Special Branch officers were apprehended in a Delhi hotel while keeping watch on Soren.
In response to these claims, BJP state president Babulal Marandi has demanded an investigation by a sitting High Court judge. Marandi stated, “Two special branch officials have been arrested in Delhi and there are allegations of attempts to honey trap Champai Soren ji. This is a serious issue.” He also called for the immediate suspension of the involved police officials.
Soren’s Critique of JMM and His New Path
Soren’s decision to leave JMM is also accompanied by criticism of the party. He asserted that the JMM failed to provide him with due respect and noted that the BJP has embraced him with dignity. Soren further voiced concerns about the “rampant” Bangladeshi infiltration in Santhal Pargana, which he believes threatens tribal identity and local society. “Today, Bangladeshi infiltration has become a big problem in Santhal Pargana, the holy land of (freedom fighters) Baba Tilka Manjhi and Sido-Kanhu,” Soren posted on X. He argued that the BJP is the only party serious about addressing these issues, while others are focused on vote bank politics.
Champai Soren took office as Jharkhand’s 12th Chief Minister on February 2, shortly after his predecessor Hemant Soren’s resignation. Champai Soren’s tenure was marked by political instability, leading to Hemant Soren’s return to power in July after being released on bail. Soren’s dissatisfaction with the JMM was further fueled by what he described as “bitter humiliation” and the abrupt cancellation of his government programs in early July. Soren’s decision to join the BJP is presented as a strategic move to continue his work on behalf of Jharkhand’s marginalized communities.
Soren has underscored that his efforts to address the rights and issues of tribals, Dalits, and other underrepresented groups in Jharkhand will persist under the BJP. He has highlighted the urgency of tackling the challenges facing Santhal Pargana to safeguard the local communities’ dignity and existence.
