India have kickstarted their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a grinding win over Bangladesh in Dubai. Mohammed Shami’s fifer and Shubman Gill’s terrific century were the architects of the maiden win of the tournament on a track that wasn’t conducive for shot-making. It was a slow Dubai wicket. Quite fascinatingly, India were poor on the field, dropping multiple chances. Rohit Sharma dropped a sitter to deny Axar Patel a hat-trick, while KL Rahul missed a stumping chance that irked Virat Kohli to abuse in anger. After the match, Rohit asserted that he would take Axar to a dinner to compensate for his error. Apart from this, is there KKR bias within the Indian team? Let us skim through all this and much more below.
KKR bias in Team India by Gambhir?
The talks of Gautam Gambhir’s bias towards KKR players erupted again. Harshit Rana, who played under Gambhir at KKR, was surprisingly chosen over Arshdeep Singh for India’s Champions Trophy opener. Despite Arshdeep’s great rhythm and uniqueness as a left-arm, Rana got the nod. This decision has sparked questions, with many questioning Gambhir’s preference for KKR players. Rohit Sharma dropped a crucial catch that denied Axar Patel a historic hat-trick in the India vs Bangladesh match. Patel had taken two wickets in two balls and Rohit’s drop at first slip meant he missed out on becoming the first Indian spinner to take a hat-trick in an ICC event. Rohit joked that he’ll take Axar out for dinner to apologize, saying “these things happen” in cricket. Axar also brushed off the disappointment, acknowledging that mistakes are part of the game. Virat Kohli abuses KL Rahul?
Virat Kohli was visibly frustrated when KL Rahul missed a stumping chance against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy. Kohli, known for his intensity, hurled abuse in general, not directly at Rahul. The dropped chance proved costly as Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy added 104 runs, taking Bangladesh to a respectable total. Kohli’s reaction showed his passion for the game, but fortunately, his outburst wasn’t directed at his teammate. India eventually won the match by 6 wickets. Ranji Trophy controversy
A controversy has erupted in the Ranji Trophy semifinals between Gujarat and Kerala, reminiscent of the Shivam Dube-Harshit Rana concussion sub-debate. Ravi Bishnoi, a leg spinner, was hit by a ball and replaced by pacer Hemang Patel. It erupted in a discussion with Kerala’s Jalaj Saxena. The substitution may have impacted the game, with Gujarat moving closer to Kerala’s first-innings total. Hemang Patel is a much better batter than Bishoi. The match is evenly poised, with Gujarat trailing by 28 runs. Read more here: Ranji Trophy controversy
Mohammed Shami is back!
Mohammed Shami has become the fastest bowler to take 200 ODI wickets, achieving the feat in 5126 balls. He surpassed Mitchell Starc, Saqlain Mushtaq, Brett Lee, and Waqar Younis. Shami’s milestone came during the Champions Trophy match, where he claimed a phenomenal fifer. Despite a long hiatus due to surgery and rehabilitation, Shami has developed into an all-format bowler, with an impressive record in ICC events, taking the most wickets for India in all ICC white-ball events. Virat Kohli’s issues vs leg-spin
Virat Kohli’s struggles against leg-spinners in ODIs continue. He was dismissed by Rishad Hossain in the Champions Trophy opener, his fifth dismissal by a leg-spinner in six innings. Since 2024, Kohli has scored only 31 runs in 51 deliveries against spinners, with an alarming average of 6.20. His overall ODI form has been poor, with 58 runs in 3 matches in 2024 and 79 runs in 3 matches in 2025, averaging 19.33 and 26.33 respectively.
