KARNATAKA IS ALL set for a brief spell of President’s Rule for the fifth time since integration following the resignation of the Ramakrishna Hegde government. Governor A N Banerji said that while he could make his own decision on Hegde’s resignation, he would have to wait for the President’s decision on his recommendation to dissolve the Assembly.

Zia on Cong-I win

PAKISTAN PRESIDENT ZIAUL Haq and president J R Jayewardene of Sri Lanka have sent felicitations to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his party’s resounding victory in the Lok Sabha elections. Zia said, “I look forward to working…for the development of the mutually beneficial relationship of trust and confidence between Pakistan and India…”

Cong-I Sweeps

HAVING ALREADY SECURED an unprecedented three-fourths majority, the Congress (I) is all set to enter the eighth Lok Sabha with 400 members. The party also secured a clear majority in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections by winning 21 out of 30 seats in the House and was well ahead of its rivals in the Manipur Assembly elections, the results of which are also coming in.

Gandhi’s New Council

THE NEW COUNCIL of ministers headed by Rajiv Gandhi will likely represent “a blend of the old and the new.” The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan after the Congress (I) parliamentary party formally elects Gandhi as its leader. Since Gandhi has gone on record ruling out the induction of the defeated central ministers in his new government, he may not find it difficult to take in a few new corners while retaining many of his former ministers.
