Polling second round

AS MANY AS 116 constituencies spread over six states and two Union territories will go to polls, in the second phase of the Lok Sabha election. Besides these constituencies, polling in 10 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, partially covered in the first phase on December 24 will also be completed. The third and final phase of polling is scheduled for December 28 when two Lok Sabha constituencies in Meghalaya and one in Nagaland will elect their representatives.

Tamil proposals

FACED WITH MOUNTING opposition from the majority Sinhalese Buddhist community, the Sri Lanka Cabinet dropped the government proposals for resolving the island’s ethnic problem, less than a fortnight after they were presented before an all-party conference. Spokesperson Anandatissa De Alwis said the cabinet decided to drop the proposals because of the public proclamation by the Tamil United Liberation Front that no purpose was served by discussing them further.

Repoll ordered

FOLLOWING A SPATE of complaints of booth-capturing the Election Commission ordered a repoll in 175 polling stations spread over 37 parliamentary constituencies in northern and eastern states where the Lok Sabha election was held. Bihar appeared to be the worst affected. EC secretary K Ganesan conceded that the incidence of booth-capturing appeared to have increased with time.

Pak poll announced

MARTIAL LAW WILL be withdrawn in Pakistan once power is transferred to the elected representatives of the people by March 13. The cabinet, with the president, Ziaul Haq, decided there would be no change in the deadline announced by the government earlier for holding general elections. A spokesperson for the Pakistani cabinet said a meeting between Zia and the chief election commissioner would take place and they would consider various aspects of calling a general election, such as the availability of ballot boxes.
