Bhopal evacuation
EVEN AS EXPERTS have decided to convert the remaining 15 tonnes of MIC gas, which killed more than 2,000 persons, at the Union Carbide factory, into pesticide, the Madhya Pradesh government has also announced that it will help people to evacuate localities of Old Bhopal, “should they desire to move out.”
SC on property tax
THE SUPREME COURT suggested to the house tax assessing authorities to revive the rebate of 20 per cent in the property tax assessed on self-occupied residential premises, which was being given until 1980. The court observed that self-occupied residential premises must be treated on a more favourable basis than tenanted premises while assessing property tax. It said that the right to shelter under a roof is the basic necessity of every human being.
India, US on Sri Lanka
THE DETERIORATING SITUATION in Sri Lanka was the subject of a detailed discussion at the meetings US President Ronald Reagan’s special emissary, General Vernon Walters, had with top Indian officials on December 12. The upshot of the December 12 discussions was that India made its view known that there cannot be a military solution to Sri Lanka’s ethnic question and that ultimately the President Jayewardene government had to take steps to look for a durable political solution.
Nehru award
ON DECEMBER 12, President Zail Singh conferred the 1982 Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding on former President of Senegal Leopold Sedar Senghor. The President noted that Senghor was a poet, teacher, philosopher, statesman, and an ardent promoter of the concept of universal brotherhood. The award, instituted in 1964 to perpetuate the memory of Jawaharlal Nehru, carries a cash award of Rs 2.5 lakh and a special citation and is given by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR).
