NEW DELHI : The
Aam Aadmi Party
(AAP) credited
Arvinder Singh Lovely
on Monday for the party’s alliance in the Lok Sabha elections with the Congress. This acknowledgment came a day after Lovely resigned as the Delhi unit president of the Congress, criticizing the alliance.
Sanjay Singh
, a Member of Parliament in the
Rajya Sabha
from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), stated at a press conference here that the credit for the AAP’s alliance with the Congress in the national capital also belongs to Lovely.
“I say this with responsibility that Lovely played a crucial role in our alliance with the Congress. I am not aware of the reasons for his contrary views now,” AAP MP Sanjay Singh said when questioned about the Congress leader’s resignation from the party.
He also expressed gratitude to Lovely, highlighting that he was the initial Congress leader to arrive at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s house when the latter was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, and for his significant contribution to the formation of the alliance.
Singh, however, declined to provide additional comments, stating that Lovely’s resignation is an internal issue for the Congress.
Lovely criticized the party’s alliance with the AAP and decision to field
Kanhaiya Kumar
and Udit Raj from the North East Delhi and North West Delhi constituencies in the ongoing parliamentary polls in his resignation letter.
The
Delhi Congress
opposed the alliance, but the party high-command proceeded with it. Lovely mentioned that his resignation highlighted the disagreements regarding the tie-up.
The Congress has fielded candidates from three of the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi under a seat-sharing agreement between the two constituents of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
The AAP is competing for the remaining four seats. The agreement was reached even though the two parties decided to independently participate in the elections in Punjab.
