The Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a protest in Bargur block on Tuesday highlighting a raft of demands.

The protesters called on the government to stop collecting an annual fee of ₹50 per cardholder to cover the rent for the fair price outlet in Sigaralapalli here, insisting that the government bear the rental expenses without burdening cardholders. The protesters demanded that the government pay the rental without burdening the cardholders.

The CPM demanded the issuance of house pattas for residents of Periyar Memorial Samathuvapuram in Sigaralapalli. Despite being established over two decades ago, these houses have not been granted pattas. The party also sought the relocation of a mortuary from its present spot near the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School and the bus stand in Bargur town panchayat.

Other demands include the government takeover of a community hall which is currently under the management of a private party and to put it for public use.

The CPM further called for the upgradation of the Bargur bus stand to facilitate smoother access for buses travelling to and from Bengaluru and Chennai. According to the protesters, an improved bus stand would allow such buses, which currently bypass the area, to enter Bargur, benefiting local travellers.

The party also advocated for the establishment of a Revenue Divisional Office in Bargur and the issuance of pattas to individuals without houses or land.
