Corporation Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth flagged off a new truck-mounted jetting machine, purchased at a cost of ₹63.48 lakh, with which blocks in the under ground drainage (UGD) system would be cleared with ease.

The Corporation has procured the 6,000 litre-capacity machine under the Tamil Nadu State 15th Finance Commission. Ms. Indrani said whenever, there was a block in drainage lines, sewage flowed on the roads, posing a threat to the eco-system and the health of the public.

The new machine would be deployed exclusively in zone 5 of the Corporation, she said, adding that the Corporation purchased it following petitions from the councillors and zone 5 chairperson Suveetha.

Corporation Commissioner C. Dinesh Kumar said the truck-mounted jetting machine had state-of-the-art technology which would make identification and clearing of the blocks easy without manual intervention.

The engineering department and health officials appealed to the residents to not dump unused clothes, sanitary napkins and banned plastics in sewer lines, which choked the main UGD system.

The public could contact the ward offices concerned for any sewer-related issues and the machine would be deployed by the authorities, they said.

Manjapai distributed

Earlier, Ms. Indrani distributed ‘manjapai’ (yellow cloth bag) to the students of a government girls higher secondary school in Mahaboobpalayam. She appealed to the students to educate the masses to use the manjapai and other forms of eco-friendly bags such as jute bags and avoid banned plastics and polythene bags.

The Mayor urged them to be a part of the eco-system which would preserve the earth.

Deputy Mayor T. Nagarajan, Utkarsh Global Foundation manager Vasantha Raja, School Education Department officials and councillors participated in the function.
