Controversy erupted during the Rajasthan Royals vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru Eliminator match when Dinesh Karthik who was adjudged LBW by the on-field umpire got a reprieve from the 3rd umpire.
Karthik, batting on 0, was hit on the pads which looked to be fairly plumb and the on-field umpire gave it as out. Karthik immediately went for a review and the third umpire Anil Chaudhary found a spike on the UltraEdge even though it came before the ball hit the pad and told the on-field official to reverse the decision.
However, after closer inspection, it looked as if the spike on the UltraEdge was due to the bat hitting the pad with even the commentators baffled by the situation. Ravi Shastri even went as far as calling it a shocker.
“The bat hit the pad .. that was OUT .. #IPL .. Shocking decision ..,” said former England player Michael Vaughan on X.
The decision even led to the normally calm and composed Kumar Sangakkara going to have a word with the officials while bowler Avesh Khan as well as everyone else on the field stood perplexed.
Earlier, Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and opted to bowl against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the eliminator of the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday.
Shimron Hetmyer will bolster the RR batting as ‘impact’ substitute player. RCB are going with the same side that beat Chennai Super Kings in a must-win game to seal the play-offs berth.
The winner of the eliminator will play Sunrisers Hyderabad in qualifier two. Kolkata Knight Riders are already through to the final with a win against SRH in qualifier one on Tuesday.
