Rahul Gandhi’s latest controversial remarks during his visit to the United States continue to draw criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders. On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attacked the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, stating that Rahul Gandhi is heading towards becoming an “anti-India separatist group leader.”

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Yogi said, “Congress prince Rahul Gandhi is heading towards becoming the leader of an anti-India separatist group.” He further stated, “Their only aim is to destroy the unity, integrity, and social harmony of India and push the country towards civil war.”

“The prince of Congress, who had formed an alliance with the anti-national National Conference and had broken into the reservation system of the backward classes, handing over a major part of it to the Muslims, is now hatching a conspiracy to abolish reservation from the country. But Rahul Gandhi should understand that as long as there is even one BJP worker in this country, his divisive intentions will not succeed,” the post continued.

Yogi’s statement came in the wake of Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to the USA, where he made comments on the Sikh community, China, and reservations.

Here’s what Rahul Gandhi said:

While addressing the Indian diaspora in Washington DC on Monday, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi claimed that the fight in India was not about politics, but about whether a Sikh could wear a turban or go to a gurudwara because the RSS was treating certain states and religions as inferior.

Responding to a question on how long reservation would continue in India, he said: “We will think of scrapping reservations when India is a fair place. And India is not a fair place now.”

While making comments on the political fight in the country, Gandhi said, “First of all, you have to understand what the fight is about. The fight is not about politics. That is superficial.” After asking a Sikh in the crowd his name, Gandhi added: “The fight is about whether he, as a Sikh, is going to be allowed to wear his turban in India and he, as a Sikh, is going to be allowed to wear a ‘kada’ (bracelet) in India, or he as a Sikh is going to be able to go to a gurudwara. That’s what the fight is about … not just for him, for all religions.”

This is because of the way the RSS treats different sections of the society, he added.

“I can see here in the crowd people from Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, I can see all these people … You say Kerala is just a simple word, or you say Punjab is a simple word. But these are not simple words,” he said.

“This is your history, your language, your tradition, your entire imagination is in these words and what the RSS is basically saying is that certain states are inferior to other states, certain languages are inferior to other languages, certain religions are inferior to other religions, certain communities are inferior to other communities, this is what the fight is about,” Gandhi added.
