PCB removed Shaheen Afridi from T20 captaincy, handing the reigns back to Babar Azam. The decision was met with both cheers and jeers. Danish Kaneria failed to see the logic behind PCB’s decision.
Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria on Friday slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board on various issues ranging from change in leadership in the T20 format to appointing two different coaches for the white-ball and red-ball formats.
PCB has been in the news recently for various reasons. PCB removed Shaheen Afridi from captaincy after giving him just a single T20I series against New Zealand. The board reintroduced Babar Azam as Pakistan’s captain. The decision was met with cheers as well as jeers in the cricketing fraternity.
‘Babar in place of Shaheen will only add to confusion’
Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria slammed PCB’s decision to change the leadership in an interaction with Times Now and called PCB ‘confused.com’.
“Shaheen was already bestowed with leadership duties post the 2023 ODI World Cup. Why do you have to remove him so soon? This decision shows that the PCB is always troubled and influenced by the outside noise. Favouritism also plays a huge part in the PCB’s decision making process. I can’t wrap my head around the PCB’s decision making process. The players do not have any sort of clarity about their individual roles in the team. PCB operates like ‘confused.com’ and nobody understands what they are trying to do. Babar Azam becoming the Pakistan captain shows that the PCB is going backwards which shouldn’t be the case,” Kaneria said on the leadership change.

‘PCB always tries to copy other boards’
Recently, PCB announced two different coaches for the national team. Gary Kirsten was chosen to helm the team in white-ball formats, while Jason Gillespie will lead the team in the red-ball format. Danish Kaneria was unhappy with the decision. He questioned the rationale behind having two different coaches when the players remain more or less the same across formats.
“Everybody has their own model that they stick to and eventually earn success. PCB has a different take on it, they always try to copy other boards based on their success and in the end mess everything up. There’s nothing such as coaching in international cricket. It is all about mentoring to be honest. Pakistan’s white ball and red ball team are almost the same, why do they need separate coaches? There should always been one coach who mentors the player in a better manner. Different coaches will pass on different instructions and advises to the same set of players and it will only get confusing for the individual playing the game,” he said.
