Clean Up marshals to be deployed at hospitals

in the city. The Clean Up marshals are expected to crack down on visitors and relatives of patients, who dirty the premises and surroundings of the hospital. After the BMC reintroduced Clean Up marshals, a sum of over Rs 17 lakh has been collected as

fines

so far.

The Clean Up marshals will be deployed from Monday at six hospitals that is Sion, Nair, KEM, Rajawadi-Ghatkopar, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital, Kandivali and Cooper hospital. Initially, the BMC will deploy about four Clean Up marshals at each of these locations.
“In view of the need for keeping hospital premises clean, we are deploying clean up marshals at the hospitals on an experimental basis and will expand it to other hospitals,” said BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Sudhakar Shinde.
“The clean up marshals will fine anybody, who dirties the hospital premises, by spitting, littering, throwing food, etc, including those visiting the hospital, relatives of patients and even BMC employees,” said a BMC official.

The BMC reintroduced clean-up marshals and deployed them on the streets from April 13. So, far the Clean Up Marshals have fined as many as 5,842 persons and have collected a fine amount of over Rs 17 lakh till May 3.
The fines are imposed for offences such as spitting, defecating and littering among others and the fines range from Rs 100 to Rs 1000. The agency appointed for deploying clean up marshals keeps 50% of the penalised amount while the remaining 50% goes to BMC.
