Some of the most well-known choreographers, such as

Remo D’Souza

,

Bosco Martis

,

Vijay Ganguly

,

Kruti Mahesh

, and

Ganesh Acharya

, got together recently to talk about how dance directors in the Hindi film industry aren’t given enough credit for their work. During the conversation, they disclosed situations in which producers failed to give them credit for their contributions to well-known songs like ‘

Badtameez Dil

’ and ‘What Jumka?’ since their names were left off of the YouTube description section.

They also bemoaned the lack of recognition for Prem Rakshit, the

choreographer

of RRR’s hugely successful song ‘Naatu Naatu’ at the Oscars.
During a conversation on the YouTube channel Nritya Shakti, Bosco shared, “The job of choreographers is to take a lot of responsibility for a film’s promotion. For instance, every teaser will have a shot of a song or only shots of the song. So, they specialise in giving a film that glory.” Bosco then quickly moved towards Remo and reminded him how his name was not on the credit list of the song “Badtameez Dil” on YouTube. He said, “Your name is not there in the description of Badtameez Dil.”
Adding to the discussion, Ganesh Acharya revealed that the YouTube description of the song ‘What Jhumka?’ from the film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ did not give him credit either. Bosco went on to say that despite winning a national award for his choreography in the song ‘Senorita’, which is from the film ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, his name is not listed in the credits.
During the discussion, the choreographers claimed that despite decades of struggling for recognition, they are still not given credit on websites like YouTube. The discussion’s moderator, Shakti Mohan, noted that since there isn’t a list of choreographers and the songs they have created, it can occasionally be difficult to determine who has created what.

The choreographers discussed how disappointed they were that Prem Rakshit, their colleague who choreographed the Oscar-winning song ‘Naatu Naatu’, wasn’t given more recognition at the Oscars, despite the awards ceremony featuring a performance of the song.
Bosco stated, “I was shocked… ‘Naatu Naatu’ the song was celebrated at the Oscars. So, I was like why was the choreographer not celebrated? That song was performed at the Oscars, they performed those steps that he created.” Remo added to this and said, “And no actor, no director, no music composer nobody mentioned his name.” Bosco added, “When you get that platform, you make sure that you are visible, that you are celebrated because you have put in a lot of effort and hard work, and not only India, the world danced to that song.”

When ‘Naatu Naatu’ won the Best Song Oscar in 2023, Prem Rakshit wasn’t there, but MM Keeravani, the film’s composer, did mention him in his speech and said, “This award belong to in order of priority to my brother and the film’s director SS Rajamouli for his vision and constant trust. In order of priority…Mr Prem Rakshit, who animated the song and without him this wouldn’t have happened.”
