Chinese shuttler He Bing Jiao has announced her international retirement from the sport on Tuesday, shortly after her medal-winning Paris Olympics campaign.

The 27-year-old clinched the women’s badminton singles silver medal in Paris as she lost to world no. 1 An Se Young in the final.

Bingjiao burst into the spotlight after finishing runner-up finish behind Akane Yamaguchi at the BWF World Junior Championships 2014. In the Youth Olympic Games later that same year at home in Nanjing, Bingjiao beat Yamaguchi to claim gold in the final.

Bing Jiao calls time on her career after having racked up a win-loss record of 336-125 across 461 singles matches. Bing Jiao also won 27 of the 36 games she contested in 2024. Bing Jiao opened her Paris Olympics campaign with comfortable group-stage wins before trumping India’s PV Sindhu in the Round of 16 match. She took down compatriot Chen Yu Fei in straight games in the quarter-final.

The southpaw then overhauled Spain’s Carolina Marina as she retired from their semi-final clash with an injury. Bing Jiao, who missed out on the bronze medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021 against Sindhu, finished with the silver in Paris as she suffered a straight-game defeat against Se Young.

Festive offer

The Chinese star won the hearts of fans at the Games and on social media as she held a Spanish flag pin on the podium as a tribute to Carolina Marin, who had retired injured during their semi-final meeting.

Bing Jiao was also part of multiple-time gold-medal-winning Chinese sides at the Sudirman Cup and the Uber Cup. She also won two bronze medals at the World Championships in 2018 and 2021.
