Buddha Purnima 2024 bank holiday: On Thursday, May 23, banks in several states will remain closed due to the Buddha Purnima holiday, as per the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday list. However, customers can still access digital banking services, which have simplified financial management, particularly during bank holidays.
Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, is the most significant holiday for Buddhists worldwide.

According to an ET report, it is observed on the Full Moon Day of May (Vaisakh) and is considered a thrice blessed day as it marks the birth of Lord Buddha in Lumbini, his Enlightenment in Buddhagaya, and his entry into Mahaparinirvana in Kusinagar.
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday list, banks will be closed for 14 days in May 2024. The holidays include Maharashtra Din/May Day (Labour Day), Lok Sabha General Elections 2024, Birthday of Rabindranath Tagore, Basava Jayanti/Akshaya Tritiya, State Day, Buddha Pournima, and Nazrul Jayanti. The Government of India has declared only three national holidays: Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August), and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October).
On May 25, banks will be closed in Tripura and Orissa on the occasion of Nazrul Jayanti/Lok Sabha General Elections 2024 (fourth Saturday). The RBI designates certain holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.
