NEW DELHI: The BJP spent Rs 1,737.7 crore on the 2024 general election, of which Rs 1,492.4 crore was for general party propaganda — both by the party’s central headquarters and its state, district or local level units — and Rs 245.3 crore for candidate-related expenses, again across all its units.
As per BJP’s expenditure report for April-May 2024 polls filed with the EC last week, BJP’s central headquarter unit incurred a gross expenditure of Rs 884.5 crore on general party propaganda. Media advertisements across print and electronic media, bulk SMS, cable, website and TV channel etc cost the BJP central unit Rs 611.5 crore. Another Rs 168.9 crore was spent on travel expenses of star campaigners; Rs 2.53 crore on travel expenses of ‘others’; Rs 55.7 crore on publicity materials including posters and banners, hoardings, arches and gates etc; and Rs 19.8 crore on public meetings, processions and rallies.
As regards the gross expenditure incurred/authorised for the candidates, other than the general party propaganda, a total Rs 245.3 crore was expended by the BJP central headquarters and units of all election-related states. Of this, Rs 29.6 crore was spent on public meetings and processions of candidates, Rs 7.37 crore on publicity materials, Rs 58 lakh on media payments and over Rs 3 crore on other expenses. Another Rs 1.1 crore was spent on candidates’ virtual media campaigns.
Gross receipts declared by the BJP central headquarters and its state, district and local units, for the period between the date of announcement and date of completion of election, totalled Rs 6,268 crore.
