Devajit Saikia was elected as the Honorary Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on January 12, 2025.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has scheduled a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on March 1 to elect a new joint secretary. The timing of this meeting is particularly interesting, as it falls in the middle of the ICC Champions Trophy. However, the BCCI is bound by its constitution to fill the vacancy within 45 days, making the election unavoidable.
The joint secretary’s post became vacant after Devjit Saikia was promoted to secretary, replacing Jay Shah, who moved on to take up a role at the International Cricket Council (ICC). While Saikia and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia were elected unopposed as secretary and treasurer earlier this year, the joint secretary’s position still needs to be filled. This news has been shared by Cricbuzz.
In the interim, Devajit Saikia, the current joint secretary, was appointed as the acting secretary by BCCI president Roger Binny. The decision was made under Article 7.2(d) of the BCCI constitution, which allows the president to delegate responsibilities in case of a vacancy. However, no interim appointment has been made for the treasurer’s position.
Election Process and Timeline
The BCCI’s Electoral Officer, AK Joti, has laid out the election process, with nominations for both posts to be filed on January 3 and 4. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on January 6, and candidates will have until January 7 to withdraw. The final list of candidates will be announced by 5 PM on January 7. The election and declaration of results are scheduled for January 12.
Here’s a detailed timeline of the election process:
