BCCI AGM 2024: Key focus on electing ICC representatives, Jay Shah’s successor and annual budget

The BCCI AGM will not only finalise India’s representation at the ICC but will also shape key administrative and operational strategies for Indian cricket moving forward.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold its 93rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday in Bengaluru, with the election of India’s representatives to the International Cricket Council (ICC) being the primary agenda. While speculation around the selection of a new BCCI secretary has gained momentum, it is not on the official agenda for this meeting.

With the ICC conclave scheduled in Dubai at the end of the Women’s T20 World Cup, the BCCI will need to finalise its representatives for the global body’s meetings. Current BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who has regularly represented India at ICC meetings, will continue to hold his position until he takes over as ICC chairman on December 1.

BCCI President Roger Binny serves as the Alternate Director to represent the board at ICC meetings, but he has rarely performed this role. The AGM will likely determine whether Binny will continue or if another individual will take on the responsibility.

Succession of Jay Shah: Informal discussions expected

While finding a successor to Jay Shah is not officially on the agenda, informal discussions among the members are anticipated. The leading names for the post are Anil Patel, the Gujarat Cricket Association secretary, and Rohan Jaitley, president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association.

However, Patel is believed to be the frontrunner, with the final decision likely to be ratified at a Special General Meeting (SGM), the date for which may be revealed during the AGM.

Additional agenda items for BCCI AGM Meeting

Apart from electing representatives, the AGM will also focus on several important topics, including:

  • Ratification of a representative from the Indian Cricketer’s Association (ICA)
  • Appointment of two members from the General Body
  • Formation of sub-committees such as the Cricket Committee
  • Approval of the annual budget for the 2024-25 cricket season
  • Deliberation on the report submitted under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Policy

IPL Governing Council Meeting

In addition to the AGM, the IPL Governing Council is set to meet on Saturday to address key decisions for the upcoming IPL 2025 season.

One of the primary points of discussion will be the retention policy for teams. It is expected that each team will be allowed to retain five players, along with the option to use one Right to Match (RTM) card ahead of the 2025 auction.

Decisions awaited

The AGM will not only finalise India’s representation at the ICC but will also shape key administrative and operational strategies for Indian cricket moving forward. The much-anticipated announcements around the IPL auction date, retention rules, and other decisions are expected to follow the AGM, setting the course for an important year in Indian cricket.

As the cricketing world awaits these decisions, all eyes will be on the outcome of Sunday’s discussions in Bengaluru.
