Around 700 AIADMK members on Tuesday staged a protest in Thoothukudi against the sluggish response of the DMK government in investigating the sexual assault incident involving a student at Anna University in Chennai.
The party leaders had announced a State-wide protest on Monday, condemning the DMK government for its failure to maintain law and order in Tamil Nadu and the assault incident in Anna University. However, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s participation in an event in Thoothukudi led to postponement of the protest.
The protest, headed by Thoothukudi South district’s secretary S.P. Shanmuganathan, took place near Chidambara Nagar bus stop. Despite the widespread rainfall in Thoothukudi, AIADMK members participated in the protest holding umbrellas, while many braved the downpour and raised slogans against the DMK government.
“The present government has failed to ensure law and order in the State leading to such unacceptable incidents,” the protestors said.
Since the protestors failed to obtain permission from the police, they were arrested and lodged in a private hall in the city.
