The Australia vs West Indies warm-up match before the T20 World Cup 2024 turned out to be a high-scoring affair where the Aussies were beaten fair and square by a spirited Caribbean side by 35 runs. The match saw over 400 runs being scored on a flat Queen’s Park Oval pitch including 3 half-centuries.
Australia won the toss and elected to chase in the tie. West Indies openers Shai Hope and Johnson Charles started the innings slowly, but Nicolas Pooran had other plans. The left-handed batter destroyed the Aussie bowling line-up with his aggressive approach. He ultimately scored 75 runs off 25 balls, including 8 sixes and 5 fours. He was ably assisted by Rovman Powell (52 off 25) and Sherfane Rutherford (47 off 18).
West Indies got a huge total of 257 runs on the board courtesy of the aggressive innings. Aussies, in reply, had a good start of their own with David Warner and Ashton Agar but they could not sustain it. Josh Inglis top-scored for the Aussies with 55 but it wasn’t enough as West Indies kept the pressure up and got wickets in regular intervals.
