Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo fail to make it to Men’s World XI for the first time in 17 years
After 17 long years, the streak finally comes to an end. Ace footballer Lionel Messi has not been named in the 2024 FIFPro Men’s World XI. The Argentine superstar has been a constant name in the being voted in the FIFPRO Men’s World 11. But now after 17 long years, Messi has not been selected.
The voting for the FIFPRO Men’s World 11 is done by professional footballers from 70 countries across the globe. Messi has been a constant name on the list in a mega streak that began way back on 17th December 2007. And now finally on 9th December 2024, the streak comes to an end.
2024 – A year of no Messi and Ronaldo in Men’s World XI
For the past 17 editions of the award, Messi has been present. Arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo is the only other player who comes close to matching the tally with Messi. Ronaldo is his career has made it to the Men’s World XI for a span of 15 years. Both the players made their debut way back in 2007 and now 2024 is the year where both the superstars are not present in the list. Ronaldo made his debut in the FIFPRO Men’s World 11 back in 2006.
Messi was very close to making it to the 11th rank but fell close by just 1 rank. He accumulated 21,266 votes from fellow professional players and finished 12th on the list. From a pool of 5096 players, Messi was adjudged as the fourth-best forward in the list.
It is safe to say that the 2023-24 season hasn’t been bad for the Argentine superstar. While he no longer plays in the top leagues of Europe, he has made the USA his own, after making a switch to MLS last season. This season with his country, he went on to win the Copa America 2024 and lost out in the qualifiers of the MLS Cup.
