1 dead after ferry with passengers capsizes near Gateway of India in Mumbai; rescue operations underway

NEW DELHI: A passenger died and 66 others were rescued, while search is underway for around a dozen others aboard a ferry that capsized on Wednesday while en route to Elephanta Island from Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India.
Reports suggest that the ferry was carrying approximately 80 passengers, though the exact number remains unconfirmed.
The ferry was on way to Elephanta Islands, a popular tourist destination near Mumbai, when it capsized, after a small boat dashed against it at around 4 pm.
The videos of the incident that soon emerged afterwards showed ongoing rescue operations.

Rescue efforts have been launched in coordination between the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Police. The operation involves 11 Navy boats, three Marine Police boats, and one Coast Guard vessel actively searching the area. Additionally, four helicopters have been deployed for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations to locate any remaining passengers.
The cause of the accident is yet to be determined as authorities are focusing on locating survivors.
