Lando Norris led McLaren from pole position and finished ahead of arch-rival and defending world champion Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen to win the inaugural race — Australian Grand Prix — of the Formula One Championship 2025 in Melbourne on Sunday.

In a rain-affected race where McLaren started with 1-2 after Norris and Oscar Piastri finished in the top two in qualifying, Verstappen finished second while Mercedes’ George Russell was third.

Williams too had a phenomenal start to the season as Alexander Albon finished fourth while rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes got himself a creditable fifth-place finish.

It was a disastrous end for homeboy Piastri, who was gunning for a podium finish throughout the race but a steering lock-up pushed the Australian off the track. He finished ninth.

This is McLaren’s 11th Australian Grand Prix win.
