In another major initiative on Punjab, Governor K T Satarawala has been replaced by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Arjun Singh. The cabinet committee will visit Punjab and tour selected areas to meet the people, including Akali leaders. The government has also started reviewing the cases of arrested Akalis, another step to meet the demand for the release of all Akali workers.
Bihar CM Sworn In
BINDESHWARI DUBE, 61-YEAR-OLD PCC-I president and chief of the Indian National Trade Union Congress, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar within hours of his unanimous election as leader of the new legislative wing of the Congress (I). Surprisingly, after demitting the chief ministership, Chandrasekhar Singh flew to Delhi for consultations with the high command.

THERE IS A distinct possibility of a meeting between Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Pakistan President General Zia-ul-Haq in Moscow, where both of them have gone to attend Konstantin Chernenko’s funeral. The meeting can turn out to be important considering that India and Pakistan have begun exploring ways to resume their stalled dialogue on improving their relations.
Liquor Poisoning
A KILLER DRINK tragedy claimed at least 14 lives in Ahmedabad while 30 others were fighting for their lives in the civil hospital. The victims, who belonged to the labour area of Rajpura-Gomtipur, are believed to have consumed a brew called “cologne” in an illicit joint at Rajapura. Most victims were blind and unconscious when they were rushed to the hospitals. 10 persons in critical condition were brought to the civil hospital.
