The Union Finance ministry has finalised a plan for massive tax raids in the coming weeks in order to unearth black money. The government action follows the resolve of the Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, to bring an end to what is termed the parallel economy. Gandhi had, in a recent election speech in Rajasthan, announced that no effort would be spared in stamping out the black money evil.

Union Carbide Sued

The Union government has decided to institute legal proceedings against the multinational, Union Carbide, in an American court on behalf of the Bhopal gas victims. To enable it to do so, it promulgated the Bhopal Gas Leak Disaster (Procedure of Claims) Ordinance, 1985 in New Delhi on February 20.

Sri Lanka Militancy

Sri Lankan President J R Jayewardene said the northern Tamil militants were now preparing for a “head-on battle” with the Lankan army. Opening the fifth session of Parliament amidst unprecedented security, Jayewardene claimed that the Sri Lankan government was in possession of “documentary evidence” that some of those in position in South India were “actively responsible” for attempts to unite the Sri Lankan Tamil terrorist groups under a common programme (India has denied that terrorists are trained in camps in India).

India Beats Pakistan

India’s latest batting sensation, Mohammad Azrahuddin and veteran captain Sunil Gavaskar led their team to a six-wicket victory over Pakistan in a World Championship of Cricket match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
