NEW DELHI: Bhartiya Janata Party leader
Parvesh Verma
on Sunday said that the saffron party’s victory in the national capital refreshed the memories of 1993 assembly elections, when BJP came to power 27 years ago.
“BJP and PM Modi have given me this opportunity to contest from New Delhi assembly seat. I congratulate all the MLAs who have been elected. All the seats of ‘Bahri Dilli’ (outer Delhi) have now been won by the BJP. The memories of 1993 have now been afresh…I thank all the people that you have made BJP win this many seats that we are going to form the government,” the potential BJP CM face said.
“Our government will work for Delhi Dehaat and all the regions. All the dreams of Dr Sahib Singh Verma will be fulfilled. All the resolves of PM Modi will be fulfilled. We will beautify Delhi – our national capital,” he added.
As the BJP is yet to announce its CM pick, Verma said on Saturday that the party’s top leadership would decide the chief ministerial face.
Verma defeated former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal by over 4,000 votes, emerging as a giant-slayer. Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit finished third with just over 4,500 votes. Despite AAP’s losses, chief minister Atishi managed to retain her seat.
BJP scored a landslide victory in the Delhi, securing 48 out of 70 seats and marking its return to power in the capital after 27 years. The ruling AAP suffered a massive setback, losing several strongholds, while Congress continued its decline, finishing a distant third.
