IPL 2025: Hardik Pandya has been officially confirmed to continue as the captain of Mumbai Indians (MI) for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Despite facing a one-game suspension for a slow over-rate offense, Hardik will resume his leadership role after the ban is lifted. In his absence, India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is a strong contender to step in and lead MI for the season opener.
The BCCI’s decision to ban Hardik Pandya for the first game of IPL 2025 stems from Mumbai Indians’ slow over-rate in their final match of IPL 2024. As per BCCI regulations, a captain is fined Rs 12 lakh for a first-time slow over-rate offense, with repeated infractions leading to heftier fines and potential suspensions.
Apart from the financial penalties, a captain can also be handed a one-game ban for repeated slow over-rate offences. Hardik’s suspension arises from Mumbai Indians’ inability to complete 20 overs within the allotted time in three matches, with the third offence taking place in their final game against the Lucknow Super Giants.
