Ramanathapuram district Superintendent of Police G Chandeesh has warned of stern action against those two-wheeler riders and four-wheeler drivers who fail to wear helmets/seat-belts.
In a press release issued here on Monday, he said that during an inspection conducted across many parts of the district, including educational institutions, it has come to notice that except for a few, many parents, dropping their children, were not wearing helmets.
There was a possibility that when their wards turned 18 years, they too may not wear helmets or the seat-belts since the parents were not practising the safety aspects. Thus they may neglect the Motor Vehicle Rules.
In some locations, the police noticed that the riders placed their children’s school bags and lunch bags on the front side, carrying two or three children, which increased the likelihood of accidents, Mr Chandeesh said and appealed to the riders to wear helmets voluntarily in their own interest.
The traffic police officers instructed the motorists to wear helmets and educated them about the need to follow traffic rules.
The police also said that they would launch checks near schools as a first step as the riders carried children on the two-wheelers to drop and pick up from the educational institutions.
Considering the rise in number of road accidents reported in the district, there was a need to prevent and also save lives. Some of the personnel said that more than the laws, safety aspect should emerge from every individual, which alone would help accident-free city/district.
