Shami had played an international match after 436 days, having injured his angle during the ODI World Cup 2023.
Mohammed Shami hasn’t been included in the India cricket team’s playing XI for the 4th England T20I. Having played an international match after 14 months, Shami has been replaced with Arshdeep Singh in Pune. The question arises, is Shami injured again? Has he been left out to ensure Team India wins the series? Or has Shami been rested to manage his load before the ICC Champions Trophy?
No place for Shami in India’s Playing XI
There is no answer to any of these questions. At least for now. Team India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, revealed after losing the toss at the MCA Cricket Stadium that three changes will be made to the team. The important one, of course, was that of Shami. “Arshdeep comes in place of Shami,” SKY told Ravi Shastri.
Is Shami injured or rested?
Suryakumar didn’t expand on why Shami wasn’t in the team. For reasons unknown, the pacer didn’t play in the first two T20Is either. From comments made by Shami’s childhood coach, Badruddin, and Team India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, it could be concluded that perhaps the reason why the pacer didn’t play in Kolkata or Chennai was because the management wanted to ease Shami into international cricket.
“There is definitely a plan, looking at the coming matches, the ODIs. That is something the coach Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav will take a call. Fitness, definitely not a problem. Depending on how they plan to build his load, it all depends on that,” Kotak had told reporters in Rajkot.
Since neither the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) nor Team India has said anything, you can’t come to a definitive conclusion as to why Shami isn’t playing. The most logical reason seems to be that the pacer is rested to ensure that he can play all three ODIs against England in a week. Whether Mohammed Shami has injured himself before the ICC Champions Trophy can’t be known until BCCI provides an update.
