The upcoming historical drama Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna as
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj
and Maharani Yesubai, has found itself at the center of controversy ahead of its February 14 release. The film’s trailer, launched earlier this week, includes a sequence featuring the two actors performing a dance with the lezim, a traditional instrument tied to Maharashtra’s cultural heritage. This depiction has sparked backlash from Maratha groups and demands for historical accuracy.
According to Free press Journal Former Rajya Sabha MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has urged the filmmakers to consult historians and ensure that the portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj is both respectful and accurate. While he acknowledged the importance of showcasing the valiant reign of the Maratha warrior-king, he emphasized the need to address any inaccuracies before the film’s release.
The controversy gained momentum after Maratha groups protested at the historic Lal Mahal in Pune, raising objections to the dance sequence shown in the trailer. They argue that such a portrayal diminishes the dignity of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, particularly as the scene is set after his coronation. Protesters demanded that the filmmakers consult historians and make necessary corrections to the film before its theatrical debut.
The protestors warned that if these concerns are not addressed, efforts will be made to prevent the film’s release in Maharashtra. They have emphasized the significance of presenting historical figures with authenticity, highlighting the responsibility filmmakers bear when depicting such iconic personalities.
Director Laxman Utekar and the production team have yet to publicly respond to the demands for a historian’s review of the movie.
