Uttarakhand Urban Local Body poll campaigning ends, votes to be cast on Jan 23

The campaigning for the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections in Uttarakhand ended at 5 pm on Tuesday. The Urban Local Body elections will be held in the hill state on January 23 while the counting of votes will take place on January 25. The State Election Commission has given clear instructions to the officers concerned to put a ban on public meetings and election campaigning across the state after the end of election campaigning today.

A total 5404 candidates, 72 candidates for mayoral posts in 11 municipal corporations, 445 candidates for the post of chairman of 83 Municipal bodies, including Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats, are in the fray in the ULB elections across the state. 4888 candidates are trying their luck for the post of ward councillors and ward members of the local bodies across the state. The elections will be held for various posts in 100 urban local bodies. With the end of election campaigning, the candidates can go door-to-door campaigning to woo voters.

About 30,29,000 voters will cast their votes in the ULB elections. 1515 polling centres and 3394 polling booths have been set up in different parts of the state. The State Election Commission will deploy 25,800 security personnel and 16,284 government employees to ensure peaceful polling across the state.

As per the data available with the state election commission, the total number of female voters in the state is 14,66,151 while there are 15,62, 349 male voters. The total number of third gender voters is 528. The state’s highest number of voters (998231) is in Dehradun district. However, Rudraprayag, which is a hill district, has only 1,82,037 voters. Pithoragarh, which shares international boundaries, is the state’s only district where female voters outnumbered male voters. While the number of female voters in Pithoragarh is 30952, the district has 30468 male voters.
